A nyloc nut, also known as a nylon-insert lock nut, is a type of locknut that features a nylon collar. This collar serves to enhance friction on the screw thread. The nylon insert is positioned at the end of the nut and has an inner diameter slightly smaller than the major diameter of the screw. The screw thread does not directly engage with the nylon insert, but rather, the insert undergoes elastic deformation over the threads when pressure is applied during tightening. This deformation creates friction, causing the insert to lock the nut against the screw through a radial compressive force.
